The Uccellina Park

With a total area of 9800 hectares, the Maremma Park is one of the most important nature reserves in Tuscany. The territory of the park lies between the municipalities of Principina a Mare and Talamone.
The reserve is also known as Uccellina Park because for the most part the territory is included in the area of the Uccellina dunes and mountains.

Maremma Park

The Maremma Park was established in 1975, was the second regional park in Italy and the seventh in the world. The park was awarded the European Diploma for the conservation of protected areas, their biodiversity and geological and landscape diversity in 1992.

The Maremma Park is divided into five areas :

  • Trap marsh and wetland areas and mouth of the Ombrone River
  • Paduletto of Collelungo
  • Coastal strip Porto Vecchio, Cala Francese and Cala Rossa
  • Scoglio della Lepre wooded area
  • Fosso del Treccione wooded area

Environment

The nature park consists of various environments:

  • Pine forests, in the area of the Maremma coast, especially the Pineta Granducale, of about 600 hectares in the area of the Ombrone River
  • Wetlands, here is in fact one of the largest marshes in the Maremma, covering about 700 hectares, in the area of the Ombrone River, with the famous Palude della Trappola
  • Rivers, within the park flows the Ombrone River and numerous secondary streams, which arose after the reclamation of the lowland area
  • Caves, of particular interest are the caves in Maremma Park, the most famous of which include Grotta dello Scoglietto, Grotta delle Caprarecce, Grotta dell’Acquazzone and Grotta della Fabbrica
  • Forests, mainly in the Bird Mountains section, with about 3,000 hectares of hills covered with dense forests
  • Agricultural area, especially widespread orchards, vineyards, and pastures
  • Coastline, the most beautiful in Tuscany, with 25 km of pristine beaches stretching from Talamone to Principina a Mare

Flora

The Maremma Park is richly wooded, especially holm oak, strawberry tree, mastic tree, myrtle, heather, phillyrea, cork, rowan, laurel, hawthorn, ash, trilobite maple, turkey oak, and black hornbeam.
In contrast, juniper, ammofila, sea chamomile, sea medica, sea lily, Etruscan limonium, eryngium, maritime pine, and lodgepole pine are found in the dune area.
Finally, in the rocky section there is thermophilic scrub, where various plant species, Phoenician juniper, dwarf palm, tree spurge and oleaster live.

Fauna

The fauna of Maremma Park consists of mammals, fallow deer, wolf, porcupine, marten, fox, wild cat, wild boar, beech marten, hare, badger and porcupine. Special mention to the Maremma cow, a native species of southern Tuscany.
Theavifauna is mainly concentrated in the wetlands, various species live within the park, peregrine falcon, osprey, marsh harrier, buzzard, short-toed eagle owl, tawny plover, stone curlew, short-toed eagle owl, sea jay, lark, kestrel, tawny owl, barn owl, and horned owl.

Discover the Beaches of the Maremma Park

Along the 25 km of sandy coastline included in the Maremma Park are some of the most beautiful and well-known beaches in Tuscany.

Cala di Forno, is located near Talamone and can be reached by sea or on foot by following a long and challenging path of about 10 km through the woods of the nature park. The beach is wild, the waters are shallow and almost always warm and calm. Very often wild boar and deer can be encountered on this beach.
Marina di Alberese, is the most famous in the Maremma Park, accessible by foot, bicycle or shuttle service. A large expanse of sand protected by dunes and a large pine forest.
Collelungo, near Alberese, this beach is quiet and uncrowded, nestled between two imposing cliff faces. Crystal clear waters.

Walking itineraries

From the Alberese visitor center, head to the Alberese Church and follow the woodland trail until you reach the San Rabano Abbey and tower. The abbey dates back to the 11th century while the nearby tower dates back to 1321.

It starts from the Alberese visitor center and continues along the road in the Granducale pine forest for about 1.6km to the footbridge, where the A3 trail starts. The trail features towering holm oaks and Mediterranean scrub, a small pond and the beautiful natural caves, with human habitation since the Paleolithic period.

from the Alberese visitors’ center continue by bus No. 17 to the locality Pinottolai, from here the itinerary starts through the pine forest for about 1.6km, then continue following the A1 route that reaches the Abbaziadi San Rabano, built by the Benedictines in the year 1000 and the adjacent Uccellina tower, dating back to the 14th century.

From the Alberese visitor center, continue by bus No. 17 to the locality of Pinottolai, where the trail begins. For 1.6km you cross the Granducale pine forest to the footbridge, then continue until you reach the Castelmarino Tower, 1100, Collelungo Tower, 1500, Castelmarino Tower, 1100, Cala di Forno Tower. one of the most interesting routes that leads from Alberese to Cala di Forno through Mediterranean scrub forests rich in broom, juniper and rosemary. Cala di Forno is one of the most beautiful and distinctive beaches in Tuscany.

from the park entrance across the ridge, then follow the customs road until you reach Poggio Raso, continue keeping the Rivolta Tower on the left until you reach Stoppa Cave.

Maremma Nature Park Events

Festambiente

second week of August

(From 5:30 p.m.; tickets: €8 before 8 p.m. and €12 after 8 p.m./children under 12: free).

This week-long ecological festival takes place in Rispescia, a large open construction site at the foot of the Maremma Park. The festival includes free yoga and shiatsu classes, canoeing and outdoor hiking, organic food and produce stalls, political debates, and concerts by some of Italy’s best rock bands. Throughout the week, up to 50 films battle it out to win the annual Chlorophyll Film Festival.

May Song, Braccagni

May 1

The original home of Canto del Maggio, a traditional Maremma folk song and poetry festival in ottava rima. You may not know the lyrics of the songs, but you can appreciate the music, costumes, and free lunch.
