Marina di Alberese

It is one of the three beaches that are located within the Maremma Park.

Perhaps the best known, partly also because it is the most easily accessible. In fact, it can also be reached by car, by bicycle and with the shuttle service that leaves from Alberese.

It is certainly one of the most beautiful beaches in the Maremma and, for a widely shared opinion, also in Tuscany. It deserves this evaluation both for the transparency of the water and for the uniqueness of the place.

We are talking about a beach of about four kilometers in length, of fine sand. Putting together this beach and that of Collelungo we arrive at eight kilometers of sandy, wild and unspoiled coast. Marina di Alberese is characterized by the presence of beached tree trunks that create very special spontaneous sculptures. In addition, park visitors build shelters to protect themselves from the sun and wind. These huts, together with the beach, have become one of the symbols of the Maremma area.
The experience of a day spent in contact with nature, in this dream place, is certainly one of the most unforgettable ones. If you like to stay up late by the sea and watch the sun go down, this is the place to do it.

Do not expect sunbeds, umbrellas and everything that characterizes a bathhouse. We are very far from all this. On the other hand, if you are looking for the tranquility of a place in a completely natural state, this is the beach for you. Unfortunately, it is not possible to bring your dog with you. There are restrictions in this respect imposed by the park management.

About 300 meters from the beach, an area with toilets has been created, where you can find refreshments at three outlets for drinks, sandwiches and other products, in the shade of the pine trees, in perfect harmony with the environment.

In one part of the beach it is allowed to practice naturism. The area frequented by naturists is located about 2 km south of the car park in front of the beach: it is therefore necessary to calculate about half an hour of walking, for those interested.

The beach car park can accommodate a very limited number of cars. It is regulated thanks to an optical license plate reading system for car access control. At the exit, in order to pass, you will have to enter the data of your license plate, together with the payment, in the automatic machines that are located next to the barrier.

Depending on the season in which you are going to visit the beach, it makes more or less sense to try to get to the parking lot by the sea. During the summer it is perhaps more convenient to park in Alberese and take the shuttle. Of course if you like to stop and take pictures, or if you prefer to go at your own speed, to better observe nature during the journey, this option is not the most suitable.

Alternatively, we point out the possibility of renting bicycles and reaching the sea using the cycle path that starts from the visitor center. The route winds for 8 kilometers up to the coast. The first part is under the sun, but after a couple of kilometers you enter the pine forest. Along the way it will be possible to spot many animals. Starting with the wild horses and the herds of Chianina, light in color and with large horns. Horses usually park in the prairies at the beginning of the park, before the pine forest. The cows can be found in the same areas, or a little further on, around the feeders, at the times when they are foraged, in the initial part of the pine forest. Deer also love to stay in the areas frequented by horses and Chianine, but they are rarely seen together. It is very common to be able to spot them.

Foxes are often encountered on the side of the road. Especially in the low season and in the early hours of the day or in the evening, when the influx of visitors is less. They are not afraid and let themselves be approached. This is because they are fed during the tourist season. The management, however, gives clear guidelines for this not to be done. The risk is in fact that the animals are no longer able to survive autonomously, in the winter season, which is little frequented by visitors. Furthermore, the food they are given is often not suitable for their diet. So it would be best to try to avoid.

Occasionally wild boars have also been sighted, although these animals usually prefer to remain secluded, in the innermost areas of the reserve.

There are many activities that can be practiced near the beach, without leaving the park: itineraries to do on foot or by MTB, horseback riding, trips aboard horse-drawn carriages, canoe rental to go up the Ombrone river, trips guided during the day and at night to discover the animals.

This beach is perfect for those who want to spend a day at the beach, but also for those who prefer to integrate the leisure of a walk on the beach with other moments to live in nature.

In both cases it is guaranteed that you will have a beautiful day.

Tips for visiting

Certainly the first thing to put in your bag will be a bottle of water or even two. The nearest shop is a small supermarket in Alberese (8 kilometers from the beach). Better to bring your own food, too, if you plan to spend the whole day.

However, in Marina di Alberese, about three hundred meters from the beach, it is possible to buy sandwiches and drinks, in case of need.

Don’t forget sunscreen, goggles and a hat or umbrella. Even if there are huts, they may already be all occupied when you arrive.

In July and August, if you want to park near the beach, we recommend arriving early. There are few places available and the car park fills up quickly.

If you are interested in seeing the animals that populate the park, the best times of the day are early in the morning and late afternoon or evening. The summer period, being the busiest park, is the one in which sightings become less likely.

Bicycles can be rented at the supermarket already indicated. They are available in large numbers and at reasonable prices.

For those who love taking pictures, don’t forget your camera at home. You would be very sorry.
